Hello werefedup. So, when I was in elementary, I first found out that majority of my family tree had diabetes. When I was little I use to think it was some cool thing that our family only had, but I learned it was definitely something not to be proud about. As I grew up, I learned how any product that had too much sugar was BAD, well that's how my family taught me. I wish I could give you a solid answer to what it really is and how to prevent it or help one escape it, but I can't. It varies to everyone. I can't even explain how it looks like because my mom's a diabetic but she looks any other mother, her face is the same color as everyone and her skin has no spots indicating either. But, what I could tell you is how living in a diabetic family changed me. First thing that always hit me is I do not drink soda anymore. Throughout elementary and middle school, I had my food and soda that was my meals. Whenever I'd go to family parties, they would always tell my family members (who are diabetic) that drinking soda was bad for them. Until it became repetitive, I knew I needed to step up and make sure my mom didn't drink soda anymore. I promised myself that 8th grade year, written down in my diary for proof, that I would give up soda so that my mom wouldn't find the need to buy it anymore. She use to complain a lot how I would refuse to drink any and that I was being wasteful with the 7ups she bought, but I knew this was the only way. Surprisingly it worked, she stopped for good, I feel so soda-sober that I enjoy the taste of water. It was a big thing for me in the past, but I knew it had to be done. My mom now loves showing off to her friends how much I care about her by not letting her drink soda. She would randomly call me in front of her friends to get her a cup of 7up and she knows I'm going to come back and say something like "ugh, no you can have water" and I'll give her the water. There are so many other things I've learn to eat like we always eat meals mixed with meat and vegetables so that there's a balance(even some that taste bitter x[ ) and then the fruits, even if I'm so full.. she'll make me eat half a banana or asian pears. Wow just typing this makes me realize how much I've changed since that 8th grade year. My meals use to always include a hershey bar or barbecue chips, but no more due to the "diet"bete?
