It Takes Guts to Fight Obesity

For starters.... Wow!! I am so glad I found this website, it is awesome. I am actually doing a research paper based on teenage obesity right now for an american democracy class. I also have to write a proposal to the NMUSD school district. For my proposal I am going to introduce the idea of making Physical education a requirement for four years instead of just 2. I really need data though to support my idea. I want my data to prove that most high school students do not get a healthy amount of exercise in every week. I also want it to show the lack of knowledge most young people have on nutrition. My goal in the end will be to start a 4 year program in high school that really pushes kids to be physically fit and also educated in nutrition. If anyone has any ideas that could help me just let me know =) thanks so much!!

Hello Jane, thanks for joining our site. In my experience, pushing kids to be more physical fit and eating healthy shows some good results. However, I have also learned that getting information from them that identifies causes of why they are not getting physically fit would also be beneficial. For example, in the community that I work in, many to not do like to conduct physical activity because they feel inferior to athletes. Competitive games tend to highlight and promote those who are already active. What's the value for those who need it the most? None!! If they try to be competitive and fail in front of their peers, the outcomes for their self-esteem could be disasterous. By not trying at all, they may be hiding their inabilities to be at the level that certain people already are in. Therefore...no physical activity. I am speaking out of experience. It may be something you can address which may lead to schoolwide changes. Please let me know if you need help on this topic of whatever topic or project in end up working on. Good luck!

Thats great that your pushing for a change. The first step however is to collect data and its the easiest step. Look at the food being served at your own school. Take notes on it, ask for nutrition information, Get as much as you can out of the personnel serving the food. To show lack of knowledge on nutrition I suggest a survey or maybe even an interview of 10 people so you can get some numbers and percentages. (Statistics really sell in terms of persuasion) Ask your gym teacher to let you sit in and watch him conduct class. Take notes on him and contrast his methods with your own. I'll tell you right now my methods of physical activities vary completely from my gym teacher. They also work. Hope that helps. :D Feel free to send me a message for anything else :)
