It Takes Guts to Fight Obesity
"Does Providing Nutrition Information at the Point of Purchase Affect Consumer Behaviors"- Healthy Eating Research- Robert Wood Johnson Foundation -June 2009
Americans spend nearly half of their food budgets eating out, or on away-from-home food. The dramatic increase in consumption of these meals, has prompted interest in menu labeling (providing information on calories, fat, sodium, and other nutrients in menu items at point of purchase). California is the first state to require disclosure on menu's and menu boards at chain restaurants with 20 or more outlets in the state to be fully implemented by Jan.2011. Studies have clearly shown that eating out frequently at quick-service fast-food restaurants is related to greater weight gain and obesity. Assessments done in LA County suggest that annual weight gain could be reduced by 39% if menu labeling led to just 10% of major chain restaurant patrons ordering meals lower in just 100 calories per meal. Do you underestimate the calories and fat in common restaurant menu items?
How about matching the following food items with the correct amount of calories:
Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing |
A. 1240 calories |
Hamburger and Fries |
B. 3010 calories |
Chef Salad |
C. 640 calories |
Chicken Breast |
D. 930 calories |
Turkey Sandwich |
E. 370 calories |
