This feature length movie reveals some of the deceptive marketing soda companies use to get youth hooked on soda. Teens from Baldwin Park display the power they have to change the industry by taking a stand by uncovering these deceptive tactics and changing their personal behaviors as well.
Last semester in my government class, we played a mock court case based on a real court case. The court case was presented by Werefedup leader, Adriana Ochoa (she's in my class!). The gist of the case was that a 14 year old boy, Alexander was at 555 pounds and social services believed that his mother, Jerri Gray was performing a child abuse by not performing anything to reduce the weight of her child even when the services gave her the opportunity to do so. They planned to take him away and…
One of the few surgeons in the United States who will perform bariatric surgery on teens has opened a center catering to that age group amid controversy over whether or not children should take such drastic measures to curb obesity.
In 1948, the first In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park. Harry's idea of a drive-thru hamburger stand where customers could order through a two-way speaker box was quite unique. In that era, it was common to see carhops serving those who wanted to order food from their car. Harry's idea caught on and California's first drive-thru hamburger stand was born.
It was almost three years before a second In-N-Out was opened. By… Continue

Last week, Youth Leaders from Baldwin Park were interviewed by CBS (as a feature on Obesity for the Katie Couric show) to speak about the work that they have done with obesity prevention in their community. These youth - who are part of Healthy Eating Active Communities (HEAC) and Youth Activism Against Obesity (YAAO) - have worked hard to make their environments healthier for themselves and their families.
Last week, students from Baldwin Park's "Healthy Teens on The Move" - who are also founding Youth Leaders for Youth Activism Against Obesity's (YAAO) WereFedUp.com online social network - took some pictures and commented about their surroundings. This process helps youth describe their environment and empowers them to consider solutions! This process is called Photovoice.
In the next few months, Baldwin Park youth will be using these photos to influence schools, city leaders, and… Continue
I get my sleeping problems from my mom. My mom and I have this tendency that if we're in a stall position we could just shut our eyes and then we're completely knocked out. I think I observed my mom do it so much growing up that I grew immuned to it. So, today after the Youth Activism Against Obesity meeting, Christina (the advisor) and Connie (member) were in the car talking about life as usual. I was explaining to them how I get more sleep than any senior AP student I know of and I find it… Continue

Exercise provides a terrific brain boost, as a number of studies have shown. But cardiovascular fitness may trump strength training, according to new research.

Researchers from Sweden and USC examined… Continue

But since its a much smaller state than California there's more money so there are more activities for students to be in. There's cross country, football,… Continue

The city food rescue ordinance passed last Wednesday in City Council 11-0. City departments will now report back on an implementation plan within 60 days. The ordinance will facilitate donations of edible surplus food from city agencies such as the Convention Center and Parks & Recreation to emergency food banks and pantries around the city. In addition, the city will promote the idea of salvaging the tons of perfectly good food thrown in the garbage to businesses, who will hopefully… Continue
