The Accelerated Schools Garden began in the spring of 2003 with a committee of teachers and parents interested in adding green space to their urban school. In Fall 2004, the accelerated school broke ground with students and volunteers on the site of a former parking lot across the street from the school. Since then, parents, students and community members have dedicated the last Saturday of the month…

Imagine you are 12 years old. Your body is starting to do new and fascinating things like grow facial hair, smell, and change its voice. Your emotions are bouncing off the walls regularly and perhaps there is no other time in your life when what you
put into your body is of greater significance.

Last week, students from Baldwin Park's "Healthy Teens on The Move" - who are also founding Youth Leaders for Youth Activism Against Obesity's (YAAO) WereFedUp.com online social network - took some pictures and commented about their surroundings. This process helps youth describe their environment and empowers them to consider solutions! This process is called Photovoice.
In the next few months, Baldwin Park youth will be using these photos to influence schools, city leaders, and…

I get my sleeping problems from my mom. My mom and I have this tendency that if we're in a stall position we could just shut our eyes and then we're completely knocked out. I think I observed my mom do it so much growing up that I grew immuned to it. So, today after the Youth Activism Against Obesity meeting, Christina (the advisor) and Connie (member) were in the car talking about life as usual. I was explaining to them how I get more sleep than any senior AP student I know of and I find it…

Fit teens could be smarter teens
Exercise provides a terrific brain boost, as a number of studies have shown. But cardiovascular fitness may trump strength training, according to new research.
The study found that having better cardiovascular health as a teenager was linked to not only higher scores on intelligence tests, but more education and a higher income years down the road.
Researchers from Sweden and USC examined…

Talking form personal experience i moved from California to Kansas about 3 months ago. Clearwater is a small town with lots of openspace. Children from the ages of 5 years old are all alone on thier bikes and in the park. But most of all obiesity levels are really low. Between the of 10-15 obiesity in boys is 15% and in girls it's 7%. But since its a much smaller state than California there's more money so there are more activities for students to be in. There's cross country, football,…

BEFORE( with one month of living a healthier life style)

AFTER( most recent picture)
Growing up as an overweight teenager was one of the most impactful circumstances of my life. By the age of 17, I weighed 200 pounds. I used food to cope with all the difficult events in my life including my parents’ divorce. It seemed as though eating was the only…

The city food rescue ordinance passed last Wednesday in City Council 11-0. City departments will now report back on an implementation plan within 60 days. The ordinance will facilitate donations of edible surplus food from city agencies such as the Convention Center and Parks & Recreation to emergency food banks and pantries around the city. In addition, the city will promote the idea of salvaging the tons of perfectly good food thrown in the garbage to businesses, who will hopefully…

A young person once asked me, "So can obesity make me less intelligent?" Interesting viewpoint. But, it may be something that's worth looking into. Here's what I found...
Recent research through Human Brain Mapping has demonstrated that the brains of overweight and obese people looked older (less brain tissue) than their healthy counterparts. The research by UCLA neuroscientist Paul Thompson found that the brains of obese…

Hey everyone! I work for the non-profit Slow Food USA and right now we are running a national campaign to get healthier food into school lunches. School lunches provide around 31 million American children and young adults with at least one-third of their daily calories. For some students this is a main source of daily nourishment. You guys deserve nutrient rich, balanced school lunches—not meals that make you sick! So far over 30,000 kids, teachers, parents, and food workers in all 50 states…

Since its November and its time for the Thanksgiving holiday, I've decided to take on a new goal: To get abs of STEEL!!!! :D. I'm 187 right now and I can see my abs somewhat but not how I would like them to be. I plan on doing this through CKD (Cyclic Ketogenic Diet). Throughout the CKD the body begins to retrain itself to obtain glycogen (fuel for your muscles) through fat instead of carbohydrates. This in turn creates an environment conducive to pure fat loss without muscle loss which is…

(From CDC website on H1N1)
Is obesity considered an underlying medical condition placing people at higher risk of H1N1-related complications?
Obesity is not one of the medical conditions that have previously been recognized to place people at greater risk of serious seasonal flu-related complications; however, obesity has been noted as an underlying medical condition in some hospitalized novel H1N1 patients.
