Exercising In South Los Angeles...

I think it is safe to exercise in South Los Angeles, however it depends when, where, and who is around. For starters you should exercise during the day when the sun is out and in a place you are familiar With and where there are people around. Also, exercising wouldn't be such a bore when you are working out with your friends. If I was the President I would definetley support the whole idea of getting out and exercising…

It is hard for teens to get in exercise, especially when we are stressed out about AP testing or testing in general. But summer is almost here and it is a perfect opportunity to get some physical activity in. I recommend swimming. It is a great way to get in exercise and work out all the muscles in your body. That is why they have water aerobics you know, because you work out better in the water. Its easy to go swimming, even if you don't have a pool. Community centers usually have pools and it… Continue

555 pound child gets taken away from mother

Last semester in my government class, we played a mock court case based on a real court case. The court case was presented by Werefedup leader, Adriana Ochoa (she's in my class!). The gist of the case was that a 14 year old boy, Alexander was at 555 pounds and social services believed that his mother, Jerri Gray was performing a child abuse by not performing anything to reduce the weight of her child even when the services gave her the opportunity to do so. They planned to take him away and…

What Is HEALTH?

The word "health" is associated with many different things. When you think of health, what usually comes to mind? To most people it is eating salads, fruits, vegetables, and exercising daily. Healthy could mean "staying in shape" or "being thin" or not eating anything except what is considered low/no-calorie foods and doing everything a doctor may require for someone to "live a better life". Well depending…

Understanding the Budget Cuts

California's legislature passed a budget on July 24 to close a $23.1 billion deficit. The final budget includes $15.5 billion in program reductions. Many of the cuts come from reductions in health and human services, including a huge hit to Healthy Families. There are no new revenues in the package. The budget now goes to the Governor, who has said publicly he will sign.

While some may consider this good news as the state, having run out of money, has been issuing IOUs, the final… Continue

16 Things You Can Do With Yogurt

I thought I'd share a creative list of uses for one of our favorite healthy foods...

1. Bake with it. You can use it in place of milk, buttermilk, even cream for a healthier, tangier flavor.

2. Use it in place of sour cream. My fave: plain, 2% Greek yogurt topped on Mexican dishes in place of the sour cream.

3. Make dips with it.

4. Use it in place of mayo. Deviled eggs are made a million times better… Continue

6 Foods that keep you full and satisfied

The big, fat (pun intended) irony about trying to drop pounds is that cutting calories has a pesky habit of making you eat more, and more of the wrong types of foods. Think about the last time you nibbled a plain green salad for lunch. How did you feel by 6 pm? Ready to eat an entire anything and then have seconds? Hunger is a real, physical need you can’t overcome with willpower alone. So eat already—and stock up on these foods, which will keep you satiated for hours: Fill up with… Continue

All About Portion Control!

Portion control has gone out of the window.

We wolf down huge bowls of pasta, gargantuan sandwiches, vast beakers of soft drinks, without giving a thought to the health consequences or thinking that maybe we're just eating way too much.

The figures are simple. Take in too much food for your daily needs, and much of the excess will be stored as fat.

If you are overweight, one of the simplest things you can do to help yourself shed some pounds, is introduce… Continue

Want Healthy Kids? Feed them.

Good points here--to not make kids worry about their health. It has the potential to backfire--make them obsess about their weight, eating, and physical fitness--god forbid, give them an eating disorder.

Another good point: we can't replace a parent's or guardian's role in developing healthy habits in kids, you know, the unconscious kind. The author writes, "Because I was always taught to eat fruits and vegetables along… Continue
