Drinking water in schools

California has taken some good steps forward in getting rid of sugary drinks in schools. But, we haven't done as good a job of promoting healthy choices, namely water. Water is an essential nutrient and is (obviously) calorie-free. Best of all, tap water is free! Unfortunately, a recent survey found that 40% of schools report having no access to free water in cafeterias. For more information on how you can help, go to: http://www.cfContinue

The summer lunch program is particularly critical for the state’s 2 million children who rely on free breakfasts and lunches at school during the regular school year. Child hunger is highest during the summer mo… Continue

Improving Nutrition in Childcare

In California, almost 25 percent of children aged 2 to 5 are overweight or obese and at risk of a host of severe chronic health conditions and poor social and developmental outcomes. These chronic diseases yield a heavy impact on the state’s rapidly escalating health care costs. Nationally, obesity among preschoolers has tripled in the past 30 years with little sign of slowing. While policymakers have focused on improving school meals, many children are showing up to school already at an unhealt… Continue
