What is Photovoice?

Photovoice is a compelling way for youth to tell a story about where they live. First they take photographs of their communities to identify problems. Then, as problem solvers, they propose solutions. As a result, youth inspire change.
Images and stories provide persuasive evidence about community issues. It empowers residents to get involved and influence their public policy. The “photos” invite people to reflect on their community environments. The “voice” proposes solutions. The challenge is getting community decision makers to listen. Photovoice is a powerful tool.

Having Youth Inspire Change!

Using Photovoice, youth in California have improved community parks and recreation options, and increased the availability of healthy foods in their schools and neighborhoods. Youth working through the Healthy Eating Active Communities initiative are improving their environments in Baldwin Park, South Los Angeles, Fresno, and South Shasta County… (learn more)
